This morning we took a run into St Mary's which is quite a historic village on the coast. A ferry runs over to Cumberland Island which is a huge wildlife preserve off the Georgia Coast with tent camping available. We thought about going but with only 3 nights here it was hardly worth it. The ferry over to Cumberland Island was $17.00 each and we were told there was very little there in the way of facilities. Perhaps another time when we have more time to explore.
We drove past the main gate at the King's Bay Submarine Base and saw this huge sub at the main gate. I believe it is a mock up of the USS George Bancroft SSBN-643 which was retired in 1993 after 30 years of active service. Upon closer examination, the sail is from the actual sub but it appears to have been placed upon a submarine shaped cement pedestal. Still quite impressive though! Gives you an idea of the scale of these subs. I stood under the plane quite easily. We also toured the Submarine Museum in St Mary's which contained all kinds of memorabilia dating back before WW II. Unfortunately, the sub base does not do submarine tours for the public.
We then headed into Woodbine for the afternoon. This was the second day of their crawfish festival and the town was quite busy. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. Lots of local food to try. Crawfish are like tiny lobster. You can eat the tails but getting the meat out of their tiny claws is quite a bit of work. Nice and spicey. Lots of local crafts for sale, face painting for the kids, a live band playing and food everywhere. We were going try alligator but decided on the crawfish instead with a funnel cake for dessert. Funnel cake is pancake dough squeezed from a large cake decorating funnel into a deep fryer. It is squeezed into a mould about the size of dinner plate, cooked for a few minutes and then put on a plate with icing sugar on it. Quite good and not a lot different than a beavertail I should think, just a different shape is all.
On the way back to our car we passed this auction and collectable place. The sign in the front yard caught our eye so I snapped a picture of it. "Dead Peoples' Things For Sale". We certainly got a kick out of it.
