Photo Walk

Chris and I were up at 5 am this morning and on our way to the Byward Market in Ottawa. Our plan was to wander the streets early with our photo gear and take some nice pictures before the crowds started. We were hoping for some nice warm light as the sun rose over the Ottawa River but unfortunately there too much cloud cover for that. I purchased a Manfrotto tripod at Henry's yesterday and wanted to try it out on a few shots as well. We parked in the market and then walked to Nepean Point which is located behind the National Gallery. There is a nice statue of Samuel de Champlain and a small amphitheatre there overlooking where the Rideau Canal joins the Ottawa River. The light was quite soft this morning. I added a polarizing filter on this first shot to bring out the colours a bit more.

Next we wandered around to the front of the National Gallery to tackle the giant spider sculpture entitled "Maman". This spider is simply too big to get a nice photograph without a lot of distraction in the picture. I tried a few different shots from various angles and thought this was the best one. Our last stop was to pick up our weekly produce in Byward Market before heading to Zak's for breakfast. Metered parking is free in the Market until 08:30 am on Saturdays. We were all done just before that time and headed off before any of the parking police were out and about. I took this last shot of one of the veggie stands in the market. Quite colourful, don't you think?

The Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Fest is on this weekend. Hopefully we'll be able to get some great pictures of the balloons lifting off later to day or tomorrow morning.
